Sometimes I read a couple or more books and realize they were like vitamin packs in the form of books. It’s usually books by a particular author/teacher or a few in a row on a similar topic. In this article, I want to outline some books that are good for repatterning your self talk.
If you have self talk that’s not so helpful, or maybe just harmful for you, these books might help. I recognize that it’s common if we experienced a lot of trauma or saw/heard violence growing up- it can create inner turmoil. It’s important to work on this area as it impacts your overall energy.
The books I’m referring to that will help you rework how you talk with yourself are 1) Books by Pema Chodron, Buddhist author/teacher. I read a handful of her books and keep going back to them for assistance. A central theme is building kindness to yourself, being friendly to yourself and staying with yourself. 2) Books by John O’Donohue (Anam Cara, Blessing the Space Between Us and more). Overall these books can help you honor and appreciate your inner world and understanding. It can help you build compassion for yourself and the way he speaks can introduce you to what I call “upward pointing words and phrases”.
It’s an every day practice to be aware of self talk, and we might do better with it at times than other times- but it can definitely help us. At Body and Brain Yoga they say we can change our energy by changing our facial expressions, how we walk, and our WORDS. Let those books introduce you to being friendly with yourself and using empowering words.
Also, if you feel too tired or depressed to give yourself the blessing of positive self talk- these words/teachers are doing it for us.
Wishing you health and strength!
