How much screen time do you have each day? not including what’s necessary. For work and things like that. I mean scrolling, news, media, politics, etc. Just watching and being entertained- and remember the word “entertain”- when broken down to the roots, means this: Enter: In, Tain: Control, Ment: From mens, meaning mind. So there’s something to work with. And when we take in anything, food or other wise, it blocks things up if there’s just too much. Time to fast.
And if you are looking to rejuvenate and pull back some energy, maybe learn some things you really feel you want to- screens are taking that from you. And it seems like it’s just what people do now right? Kinda like many other things that are out there.
Thich Naht Hanh talks about technology fasting in his book Silence. He says it is absolutely a practice everyone should do. And he was right when he said that.
So if you find yourself on screens all the time and know you have to let go, here’s a simple lesson to remember. Think of the word “screen”. What comes to mind? A screen in basketball. Sun screen. Screened in porch. Smoke screen. What do they all have in common? They block.
So when you watch a screen- well think about it, that’s a block. You might say “what do you mean it’s just a tv show”. Right, and it’s a screen. And it’s “enter-tain-ment”, remember. So what is it blocking?
Well here are some things it blocks- your connection to your higher power, G-d. Your connection to your body. Your connection to other people. All things we want to really work on and build. It’s blocking you and you will really see that when you practice fasting from them- getting into nature more, exercise, even just walking, reading a physical book, meditating, etc.
As you let go of screens, or atleast cut down the time on them, you’ll notice many benefits. More energy, maybe more clarity, and more presence. All great things. Just sit back for a minute and sit with the idea of screens being everywhere- what effect are they having?
I hope you find this helpful and it benefits you in many ways.
Wishing you health and strength.
Peace.
