On Motivation

I picked up a bit of wisdom from my Yoga teacher today. We were talking about motivation and how at the beginning of the class, I felt distracted and unmotivated. She said sometimes when that happens, it can be helpful to lean in and give ourselves some love.

Sometimes we can get caught up in beating ourselves up to get going. Alot of the time it’s without even noticing. This can keep us in the same spot.

But let’s say it’s a workout, or a practice you’re trying to get going for. If you take the approach of being a motivating coach for yourself, instead of a critic, you can shift into a different mindset. We respond better to that- a coach motivating out of love.

Next time you are trying to get going and just low energy or unmotivated- try giving yourself a pep talk. “This workout is good for me- it’ll benefit me in a number of ways for a long time and it’s building a healthy habit.” I know it can be tough to get motivated for different things, but it’s all practice. In Buddhism they say “nothing that we practice ever gets harder.” So try letting go of self attack or criticizing, and allow your inner (everyone’s got it) motivational coach to come through. Give yourself some love and feel a little more rejuvenated and ready to put forth an effort.

Withing you strength and health!
