Letting Go Of Distractions

In this article, I’d like to propose a way to work with and let go of habits/distractions. This can be helpful for anytime you feel discomfort or pain, and feel pulled to do something to distract- it could be a substance, or something considered normal like watching hours of tv, or news, or gossip. These things can hook us- they make our energy weaker- but we can practice using awareness and meditation to develop space around that first little inclination- which can lead to a breakthrough or understanding.

In Buddhism, there’s a term called Shenpa. It’s similar to “hook”. I believe it’s the first little energetic shift that occurs before we are pulled by something- desire to distract from discomfort, or maybe something someone says. If we practice, we can be aware of that and develop a space around it.

I’d like to put forward the idea that with practice, we can be aware of that inclination- and instead of feeding into it- let’s say, picking up that drink- or pushing it away/beating ourselves up, we can feel it out with curiosity and compassion. So you’re letting yourself feel whatever is there, the energy behind it, and being compassionate with yourself.

By doing this, we can become aware of the root of it. And when you do that, you’ll pull power away from the habit or pattern- and instead, caring for yourself and the root of it- great for rejuvenation and healing.

There’s a great book called “Radical Acceptance”. It can help you understand how to feel how you’re feeling at a given moment and notice just how much we push away or distract. I’ve come across a lot of Buddhist texts that focus on that.

Wishing you health and strength!
