Healing And Strengthening The Gut

One area of nutrition and healing that’s very interesting and helpful to understand is the gut microbiome and probiotics. You can heal and strengthen your body in a big way by doing two things. 1) Giving up foods that disrupt your gut microbiome (processed carbohydrates, breads, pasta, sugary foods, artificial… anything unnatural). And 2) putting in probiotics and prebiotics (foods that feed the good bacteria- some examples are oats and fruits and vegetables). Just doing this two step process, you will notice an increase in energy and mood as well as better digestion- which means taking up more nutrients from the foods you eat.

History And Overview Of Kombucha

Kombucha is a fermented tea drink that may have originated in Asia around 2000 years ago. It is loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that can heal the body. It also contains a wide variety of probiotics making it a top drink for gut health.

Types Of Kombucha

Understanding what is in the kombucha and the benefits that come from it is good too. It can light a fire for appreciating and looking for healthy foods and herbs- just knowing what each one does for you. I’ve seen kombucha with ginger- great for digestion and anti inflammatory. Super Berry, high in antioxidants and polyphenols which protect from cancer and heart disease and help your brain. And “Clear Mind” has sage in it which protects from cancer and helps with memory and clarity. So many healing ingredients.

Kombucha And Sugar

There are some things to look out for when it comes to Kombucha- mainly, knowing how much sugar is in the type you’re drinking. Different brands have different amounts. Just to illustrate a few different kinds I’ve tried and really like- Brew Dr. “clear mind” has about 12g of sugar. Aqua ViTea has about 10g. And Nature’s Promise, Ginger, has about 4g. Of course, less is better, but as long as you don’t eat sugar otherwise, you’re good. Another thing to look for is if there is any added caffeine which would be listed in ingredients. Otherwise the caffeine content is pretty low.

THE GUT!!

Kombucha is just one of the many probiotic drinks, aside from Kefir, Yogurt Drink, Probiotic Refresher. And other probiotic sources are Yogurt, Kimchi, Saurkraut. You can have these from time to time to build that gut microbiome. And be sure to get your pre biotics- like fruits, vegetables and oats- FIBER. These foods FEED the probiotics and keep it healthy. Let go of those processed foods and sugar and junk as much as you can. You’ll feel a difference within a few days. Better digestion, more energy, better mood.

NOTE: Too much probiotic food/drinks in a given time can cause elevated levels of an amino acid called Tyramine. More on this later. But overall, get some probiotics throughout your week!

Thank you for reading and wishing you health and strength!
