I enjoy looking at different diets and ways of eating that promote health and healing and see the commonalities between them. There are areas that some of them agree on, and areas they don’t. For instance, the G-Bombs food list which I really like (the most anti inflammatory and anti cancer foods) and Mediterranean diet say to eat a lot of leafy greens (due to their health promoting compounds and antioxidants) while the Hunter Gatherer way of eating says to limit or let go of those (due to the plants defense compounds that can inhibit nutrient intake). However, they all agree on getting enough fruit in the diet, specifically Berries (one of the B’s in G-Bombs stands for Berries).
Berries are low in sugar and high in antioxidants which make them a valuable healing food. Antioxidants are known to help protect against things like heart disease and cancer. And it’s cool to see that for all of human history nature has been supplying us with these protectors. Sometimes I am in awe of nature about things like that.
Protecting Your Eyes
One berry worth noting is the Goji Berry. These berries contain an antioxidant called Zeaxanthin which helps protect the eyes and vision. Zeaxanthin is found in eggs and corn, but is super abundant in Goji Berries. And Zeaxanthin is fat soluble, meaning it is absorbed and utilized better you take in fats with it- nuts and seeds or yogurt with some fat would help get the full benefit.
Polyphenols, A Category Of Antioxidants
Polyphenols, which are a category of antioxidants, are very beneficial. They can protect us in so many ways (protecting against cancer and helping the heart) and also boost memory and focus. I’ve learned that foods that are blue, purple, or black are usually very high in Polyphenols. For instance Wild Blueberries are extremely high in them. Other foods would be things like black berries, plums, black or purple grapes, and even purple cabbage, black beans. So think of those colors and realize nature made them in a way for us to notice them.
Berries and anti oxidants are just one area of healing and nutrition that can benefit you in so many ways. If you want to lose weight, heal the body, and just feel better, berries are a great food to add or increase in your diet.
