One of the greatest things I’ve learned… or I should say that I am learning from Buddhist writing specifically, is kindness and compassion to ourselves. I’ve learned that staying open with to what we feel and being with it, even inquiring, can open up solutions and possibility. When we practice that compassion and kindness to ourselves, we feel full and can then give more and be there for other people.
It can be easy to feel something- some emotion we judge as negative, and want to get away. We might distract or numb with drink or substance, electronics, sugary foods, etc. Think of the conditioning you were put under early on- stress? eat some junk food or have some drinks. And of course those things weaken and drain us.
So what happens when we feel the pull to distract, and instead sit with ourselves and practice kindness? We might recognize a pattern and a path to growth. One little recognition and shift can help us in so many ways. And that comes from being with what’s there.
As you do this, you’ll notice something. Each time you abstain from that drink or distraction, and give yourself the time and understanding, you’ll pull a bit of your power back. It’ll strengthen you. It might not be hugely noticeable at first, but little by little, step by step, you’re healing and rejuvenating.
Wishing you health and strength!
